Volunteers Wanted!

Come and join the Birchcliffe Centre community as a welcome desk volunteer

Are you a friendly, welcoming person who loves talking about our local heritage? Are you looking for a way to get more involved with the local community? Or perhaps you're looking to enhance your workplace skills and get experience in a public-facing role?

You could be our next Welcome Desk Volunteer!

Welcome Desk volunteers provide a friendly reception to the many community members who visit the Birchcliffe Centre each day, and help them engage with our rich local heritage through our exhibitions and publications. The Birchcliffe Centre is a mixed-use space, so you will be welcoming community groups, clients for our tenant businesses, researchers using the archives, and visitors who have come to learn about the local landscape and history.

We are looking for regular volunteers for 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Welcome Desk volunteer activities include:

Reception and visitor support

  • Welcome visitors to the Birchcliffe Centre and answer initial enquiries
  • Manage the reception desk during your shift
  • Direct visitors to our small businesses, archives, and other resources
  • Maintain a welcoming and professional presence

There may be opportunity to get involved with our historic collections and new museum space, including:

  • Bringing our collections to life – such as researching and writing brief "object of the week" features or creating display labels
  • Support visitors in exploring our archives and collections
  • Help gather visitor feedback and stories about our heritage
  • Work with others to help curate our new museum area

The impact you'll have:

  • You'll be the first point of contact for visitors, helping them discover our collections and heritage resources
  • You'll help make our collections more accessible and better understood
  • You'll provide essential staffing, allowing us to open our doors and welcome the community

If you are interested in contributing in other ways (researching and writing blog posts, helping to plan events and exhibitions etc.) our Heritage Manager will be happy to discuss this!
