The Heptonstall Trail
This gentle circular walk takes you around the ancient Pennine hilltop settlement of Heptonstall, discovering its rich history and conserved stone buildings.
This trail will offer you a picture of the changing importance and fortunes of the village, reflecting its historical and industrial heritage from the 16th Century to the present day, through its remarkable buildings and stories.
About the Trail
This 2 km (1.5 mile) e-Trail will take you about 1½ hours (including stops), a bit longer if you have children with you.
The route is mostly level, but the cobbled main street is steep in parts.
Start & Finish:
The trail begins and finishes outside Towngate Tearoom at the bottom of the village. (Postcode: HX7 7LW, Grid Reference: SD98768 28043).
The beginning of the trail is best accessed by a short bus ride from Hebden Bridge (details inside). If coming by car, please follow the Visitor Parking signs as you drive up the hill. These will direct you to the Bowling and Social Club car park (HX7 7LT) at the edge of the village. There is a map on the Club wall that will guide you into the centre of the village (5 minute walk).
Alternatively, if you are fit and enjoy a challenge, walk up the steep cobbled Buttress from Hebden Bridge (over the Packhorse Bridge from Bridge Gate - look across and up!). At the top of the Buttress, walk to the right along Lee Wood Road for a short way. Opposite two houses you will see steps across the road which you should follow up. On reaching Heptonstall Road, turn right and continue to walk up until you reach the village. Allow at least half an hour, depending upon how often you pause to look back at the wonderful views (and catch your breath…); this route is relentlessly uphill.
