8. A walk around Todmorden with the Fieldens

A walk around Todmorden with the Fieldens

Explore Todmorden, discovering the role of the Fieldens and some of the town’s landmarks.

This trail will allow you to explore the wonderful town of Todmorden. As you make your way round you will learn about the role the Fieldens played in the development of the town.

The Fieldens have been active in Todmorden for many centuries; confusingly they were often called John, Joshua and Samuel (e.g. a John Fielden bought Todmorden Old Hall in 1704!). We will be focussing on the Nineteenth century Fieldens; Honest John Fielden MP, born of Quaker parents (Joshua and Martha), he developed the mill at Waterside and was a great benefactor to his workers and the town, he became a Liberal MP and was responsible for the ‘10 Hour’ Factory Act of 1847. He had 3 sons; John, Joshua and Samuel who continued to expand the business and his good works, with great success. The Fielden story also is told in the Todmorden Tops and the Fielden Dynasty e-Trail in this series.
